  • Liturgical Ministries | StJohnCatholicChurch

Extraordinary Ministers of Communion It is wondrous privilege not only to receive Christ truly present in our midst, but also to be the instrument through which Christ gives himself to the members of His Body. A deep, abiding faith in the Jesus who is our food, our life, our stay is to mark the life of all Catholics, and particularly Extraordinary Ministers. Through the Pastor, the Bishop appoints a person to this Ministry for a specific length of time. Any fully initiated Catholic, in good standing, who is a registered parishioner, is eligible to apply to serve in this ministry. Extraordinary Ministers are scheduled according to the needs or preferences of the individual EM as well as according to the needs of the parish. For more information regarding this ministry, please contact the parish office. Lectors In the Eucharistic liturgy, God is present in His Word just as truly as Jesus himself is present in the Eucharist. Therefore the proclamation of God's Word is an extremely important liturgical ministry. Through this ministry, God continues to give us life, form us, mold us, shape us, challenge us, convert us, grace us, and draw us to deeper life in Him. One who aspires to this ministry holds this belief deeply. He or she should have the skill of public reading. The scheduling of lectors is done according to the needs of preferences of the individual lector as well as according to the needs of the parish. Each lector is provided with a workbook to assist him or her in preparation. This ministry is open to any Catholic, fully initiated (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist) who is a registered parishioner. Newly confirmed youth and adults are particularly urged to consider this ministry. Please contact the parish office for more information. Altar Servers assist the presider during the liturgy, acting as the "...servants of Jesus Christ, the eternal high priest. Therefore, you are called in a particular way to be young friends of Jesus.” ~ St. Pope John Paul II They may be boys or girls, no younger than 2nd grade, teens or adults. All servers need to have received the sacraments of Baptism, First Reconciliation, and First Holy Communion. Servers should arrive 15 minutes before Mass. Servers should know and be willing to recite responses at Mass. Just as with adult liturgical ministers, school-age servers need to be responsible about showing up for their assigned Masses. One training session, conducted within the church by Mr. Doug Barborek, is required for every new server, but experienced altar servers are also welcome to refresh skills and learn new roles. Altar Servers are scheduled according to the needs or preferences of the individual Server as well as according to the needs of the parish. For more information regarding this ministry, please contact the parish office. Altar Servers Ushers and Welcoming This is an important ministry and ensures that those attending Mass or other liturgical celebrations are welcomed and that there is an orderly progression of the service. The entire parish family exercises a ministry of hospitality in that we are to mirror God’s welcoming nature in the way we welcome one another. Certain members of the community take special leadership and concern in seeing that there are no strangers here and that all who come through our doors find a welcome place in our midst. Men and women are both welcome to this ministry to greet all who arrive, to answer guests’ questions, or give directions, to take up the collection, to distribute weekly bulletins, and to perform any other service as the assembly may need. For more information regarding this ministry, please contact the parish office. Altar Care Society This ministry is designed to maintain order and cleanliness at the altar and its environment. Volunteers assist in the washing of the altar linens and decorate for the various liturgical celebrations in accordance with liturgical norms. The altar society is a vital group, if we are to have a church that will stay well maintained. If you are interested in becoming part of this ministry please contact our parish office. Sacristans The Sacristan prepares and oversees the articles and elements required for the Liturgy so that all the members of the worshipping community can take their full, conscious and active part in the liturgical celebration. The sacristan knows the meaning and purpose of the liturgy as well as the needs of the particular liturgical assembly, and works carefully to provide the members with the liturgical items needed for a meaningful, prayerful, and active celebration. The church building must be opened and lit, cleaned and decorated for the celebration. Bread and wine must be in place, vessels and vestments available, linens in order, seating arrangements made, microphones set, books and candles set out. These are examples of some of the duties that are performed diligently for the celebration of Mass by our Sacristans. If interested, please contact our parish office. The Holy Rosary Our Lord taught that praying with others is especially powerful, as He is there within our midst during these times. This is especially true for the Rosary. As a community, we come together to pray the Rosary to further nourish our relationship with God. If you are interested in learning more, please contact our parish office. “When the Holy Rosary is said well, it gives Jesus and Mary more glory and is more meritorious than any other prayer.” ~ Saint Louis de Montfort Interested?
